Coatimundi as pets

Coatimundis are said to be better pets than raccoons, although they are actually really raccoons, except that they hail from South America and have long snouts to differentiate them from your typical raccoon. They are also slimmer in build.

In terms of size, they are larger than raccoons, and are social animals, living in large groups consisting of 15 animals perhaps. Most of their time is spent in the trees, where they sleep during the day, only becoming active at night.

Why should you keep a coatimundi rather than a raccoon?

Coatimundis are more affectionate than raccoons because of their social nature, and they have a milder temprement. However, coatimundis are also inquisitive, and therefore, you need a large, spacious cage to house them most of the time. They are omnivorous, so they can take to many types of food easily.

Tamarins - very exotic and lovable monkeys

Tamarins are considered to be some of the best primates you can keep as a pet. That is because they are easy to manage, and not so excitable. So they don't jump around so much, and they quickly respond to their owners affections.

Tamarins are very small, maybe around 20-30 cm long at most, not including the tail. Although there are many species of tamarins, only some species are allowed to be kept by law. In the wild, tamarins live in the great Amazon rainforest, usually in the lower storeys of the rainforest.

They can eat a lot of things, like fruits, spiders, insects, etc. Vary their diet from time to time. They generally have a lifespan of around 15 years, and are not very demanding when it comes to care, except that they do best in a group. So, if you have a male tamarin, then keeping a female is advised.

Skunks can make good pets

Skunks can make good pets if their scent glands are removed. While not legal in some states in the USA, you should have little problem keeping a skunk in most other countries of the world. Skunks have several species worldwide, although the one most people are familiar with is the Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) found in many parts of the United States.

Skunks need a lot of attention or they can throw tantrums. They like following you around if they trust you. Skunks will naturally try to spray their odor even from a young age, so you need to cultivate a good temperament in them even from a young age. This can only be achieved by regular interaction and bonding, not by leaving them in a cage, in a corner.

If you take good care of them, they can live for about 10-15 years. They mainly eat a diet of small insects, nuts and berries. In the wild, they often raid bees nests, so they absolutely love honey when it is given to them.

Check out the cute sugar gliders

Sugar gliders are one of the most masterful acrobats of the tree tops, being able to glide great distances back home in their natural habitat. But it's enough to keep these cutie pies as pets, because they are obviously so adorable.

The eyes of sugar gliders are wide and big to utilize the minimum of light, when it goes hunting for insects in the night. We have a pair on display, both male and female but many visitors are dissapointed in not seeing them during the day. They sleep during the day, and are only active at night.

When you keep sugar gliders in captivity, do not overfeed them on fatty foods. They will not be able to glide like they do in their natural habitat, and so become really lazy....Feeding them too much will cause them to become obese (ever seen obese sugar gliders?) 

One of the stuff our sugar gliders love is honey coated crickets, but this is only as an occasional treat. They'll be quite content with commercial pellets.

Why are sugar gliders popular these days? Well, they bond with their owners and can provide loving companionship for as long as they live, which is about 10-15 years ( about as long as a cat).

Bearded dragons

Bearded dragons are native to Australia and inhabit dry, open bushland. They are now very popular because they are found to be easier to keep compared to iguanas, and are more lively, active, and responsive.

When paired up, they can breed prolifically, but proper care is needed for the hatchlings. Their basic diet consists of pint sized crickets and freshly moulted meal worms dusted in calcium and multivitamins.

They need a steady temperature of about 110 degrees Fahrenheit, so housing them in a terrarium is essential. The terrarium must be well ventilated.

Bearded dragons are now even more popular than iguanas because they have so many variable coloration forms, and if you think an iguana is way to big for your needs, do consider having a bearded dragon instead.
